A business journalist goes to Asia searching for the answer to a simple question How can I be happy? Because at 31, after her boyfriend dumps her and she gets a weird autoimmune disorder, Shawn feels like she’ll never be happy again. So she quits her job and sets out on a seven-month solo overland trek from Thailand to Nepal, with a loose plan to learn the secrets of happiness from Asia’s sages–-not knowing who they are or how to find them.
The “sages” turn out to be, among others, a Berlin lawyer, a village sorcerer, drug tourists, scam artists, fellow backpackers, Tibetan cowboys, quirky tour guides and, yes, even a monk or two.
In the end, she finds the answers she’s searching for, and they’re not what she expected at all.

Help Me, Asia explores the unique individuality of a universal phenomena that just falls short of being a cultural cliche - 'western woman follows the hippy trail to find herself.' The concept, although a true story, could have ended up being self-indulgent and superficial, or preachy at best, but instead is incredibly relatable, especially for anyone who has done any kind of real "travel".Shawn writes in a simple, easy and yet compelling manner, peppering in deep wisdom offered in the most gentle manner. I smiled, giggled, laughed out loud, and had moments of holding back tears. This book is a lot of fun, light reading, with profound insights if you happen to be looking for them.
Also, be warned - you will be moved to get moving!

This is not a fluffy self-help guide nor does it to pretend to provide all the answers to the eternal question of how one finds eternal happiness. What this book does offer is one woman's brave and inspirational journey - spiritually, emotionally, and physically - through some pretty challenging places and situations. It's easy to read, engaging, and is filled with little nuggets of wisdom that are not entirely new to me but serve as good reminders for how I choose to live my own life. Shawn Phelps also knows how to laugh at life, and at her self, and this really comes through in the book. I commend her for sharing her story and for sending a beautiful message of connection, love, and awareness to the world.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in journeying - around the world and within. This author writes in a clear, engaging manner with an artful touch. I learned surprising things about the countries she visited along with some very helpful tips on living a happier life!
I truly liked the book and would have given it a good review no matter who the author was but it was a bonus that she is Canadian. Her writing style is very readable, if you know what I mean by that. The story and how she put the words together and the story threads connecting topics and countries made it a page turner. This is a must read for people of all ages. It is at times funny, introspective, educational, self-deprecating but always interesting.
With "Help Me, Asia" Shawn D. Phelps has written a book that is relate able to most travellers. She studies how travel changes you and makes you open to new ways of thinking. The book is made as a travel statement of her own experiences ten years ago, and gives an honest view of the life of a searching traveler. It's an easy read in the best meaning of the word, it's more or less a collection of short stories, that as a whole gives the reader a story about a woman searching for a higher purpose in life, and who finds it the most unlikely places. My favourite story is when she meets an Indian couple where the husband is a hustler and the wife very authentic and nice, to follow the struggle within Shawn between heart and mind is highly entertaining and keeps you guessing till the last page.
