Imagine a world of untapped, unlimited, and unstable power. Imagine that you have been enslaved because of your natural gift to harvest this raw energy. Now, imagine this source of power wants to reach out and kill you. That’s just a small taste of the aether and what Ruth Valencia faces every day. How does she deal with this bleak fate thrust upon her? A near-constant onslaught of bad puns. This may not be the best coping mechanism.
Breaking free from her captors, Fulcrum Industries, Ruth, along with the help of a crew of outlaws, absconds with the corporation’s newest starship. Things go about as well as you might imagine after that. Attacked by pirates, they soon find themselves crash landing on a planet that has its own unique set of problems and challenges for them to overcome.
Now, on her own for the first time, Ruth must discover the extent of the power flowing through her. She must evade pirates, mercenaries, and the monstrous abominations that leak through from the aether. She must struggle to maintain both her life and freedom against forces beyond her control. With her new outlaw comrades, Ruth must discover the calamity that befell this Displaced Planet and how to survive there.
The Displaced Planet Hazards of the Periphery Book 1 eBook Justin Brownstone
The Displaced Planet is a good, quick read full of characters. The book begins by introducing the three different groups of characters. First is our protagonist group that are on the run from a mighty corporation known as Fulcrum in their recently "acquired" ship that is on the cutting edge of technology.High tailing it across the galaxy, an unexpected turn of events occurs when our protagonists, which the author refers to as the outlaws are attacked by our second group of characters, space pirates. The greedy pirates attack the ship and force our protagonist to crash land on a strange uncharted planet.
Our protagonist team is led by Captain Eben Walsh who commands his crew of different personalities. Moxie the quick talking and intellectual AI of the ship who flirts with F.D.G.T. 528 or Fidget for short, who is the local repair bot. Crispin Larsen is the ships inebriated ex-doctor who lost his license due to some malpractice events that happened in his past.
Then we have Ayla, the oddest character in the book in my opinion, next to the Shardik race that resembles a shark. Ayla is a strange blue creature that essentially "sheds her skin" or rather dies and comes back to life, this was the most confusing character for me. Next we are introduced to C&C or Charlene and Clarence, bickering twins who also happen to be clones.
Finally we get to Ruth Valencia, snatched from her parents at a young age and forced to become a corporate science experiment to help channel an aetherial essence from another dimension that has uncharted energy capabilities.
Ruth informs the crew that the ships core is leaking this highly contaminate, aetherial essence which powers the ship. The majority of the crew departs out into this unknown wilderness while Ruth, Moxie and Fidget stay behind to attempt to fix the ship. Our adventure begins when Eben and his crew soon discover that they are not alone out in the wilderness and are soon being chased by indigenous creatures of the Displaced Planet.
Displaced Planet has a sci-fi horror story feeling about it, with some good descriptive carnage and fantastic creatures. It's a decent read for the money and my only beef with the book is I had a hard time finding a protagonist I could get behind and like and by the time I did, well I'll leave that up to you to discover...

The Displaced Planet Hazards of the Periphery Book 1 eBook Justin Brownstone Reviews
I enjoyed this book a lot . The author does a good job of providing a fast paced story with a lot of memorable characters. My favorite part of the story was when Moxie, the ship AI, and Fidget, the mechanoid, were interacting. My favorite characters were Ayla and Eben. Ayla because of her unique physical ability and Eben because he reminded me of Mal, the captain on Firefly. Rumor has it there will be another book with a story set in this world eventually and I am looking forward to it!
This book is a Sci-Fi diamond in the rough! From start to finish the story is packed full of Sci-Fi/Fantasy attributes. The author borrows from many areas of the genre, my first impressions had me constantly comparing it to Firefly and a mix of Stargate (the SG-1 series in particular). The author once again does a great job of developing the female characters providing good back stories and character development but by doing so the male characters become a bit lackluster in comparison. Although I would prefer more well-rounded character development my favorite character is nor male or female, but the ship itself! I like how the author has created such an amazing character out of the abnormal once again (GERM! – Sorry for the Cultwick reference but Germ is amazing). This is by far my favorite book by the author and I look forward to more set in this world. I recommend this book to anyone that loves Sci-Fi.
